If You Had $100...

...and you could buy one red wine from a wine store (not from a mailing list), what would it be? A co-worker of mine asked my opinion about a nice bottle of red wine to say thank you to a partner who is leaving. I thought I would throw it out to you all to see if anyone had any ideas. If specific wines are too difficult to select, I'd even settle for a year and varietal. Any thoughts? Please post them in the comments.

Thanks!

  1. Good question...but a tough question as well. I'd go different ways depending on the person being gifted.

If they know something about wine, I go towards small producer, high quality, while picking a region they might have stated they liked.

If they don't know wine, I go towards big name producer in a good to great vintage.

For example, taking California Cabernet, I'd give a bottle of Drinkward Peschon to a wine knowledgeable person for any year between 2004-2007, but would probably stick to a Caymus 2005 or 2007 for a non-wine person.

Do you have any more info to help relate?

  2. I wish I did. I don't think he's incredibly knowledgeable. There are a few guys around the office with whom I discuss wine, and he's not one of them. I also never see him get wine delivered to work. I'd say they are looking to give him the red wine equivalent of a nice, accessible bottle of champagne to say thank you. I realize that a bottle of Dom might be a cliche, but it is an appropriate parallel here.

  3. Fair enough. I would look for something like the following names below. These are strong names, and a lot are high quality as well.

Cabs: Caymus or Caymus Special Selection, Silver Oak Napa, Beringer Private Reserve, Mondavi Georges de Latour, Shafer 1.5, Opus One, Stag's Leap, Ridge & Spottswoode.

Burgs/Pinots: Bouchard, Jadot, Paul Hobbs, Martinelli, Kosta Browne, Williams Selyem.

    Zins: Turley & Ridge

Italian: Uccelliera, Paolo Scavino, Allegrini, Antinori, Clerico
