Last week, Paul and Sarah joined Alan and I in New York City for drinks and then dinner out at Daniel. We started our evening off at the Champagne Bar at The Plaza on Fifth Avenue. Very crowded when we arrived, we found open seats on the sofas and chairs upstairs in the mid tier lounge in between the Champagne Bar and the Rose Bar. Decorated in heavy red drapes, dark cherry wood and rose tinted chandeliers, the lounge is intimate and comfortable.
From the wine list we choose a bottle of Pierre Peters Cuvee de Reserve from the growers section of the menu. Turns out they were out of that bottle so as an alternate we went with the 2003 Grand Vintage Moet & Chandon Brut. To accompany the champagne we ordered two plates to share; the Chips & Dips which was homemade potato chips and three dips. One was Maine Peekytoe Crab with Truffle; second was a super fresh avocado guacamole with lime and the third was a curried eggplant. This dish was a surprise in how large the portion was and how great all three dips were. I especially loved the crab that was served warm and the avocado. Homemade chips are fantastic and salty and really made the appetizer.
The other order was the Artisanal cheese platter. This one came with three cheeses. A blue, a creamy cow's milk and a semi-hard sheep's milk. The accompaniments were a grilled walnut cranberry break, grapes, fig jelly and almonds. The bread was fantastic and went so nicely with all the cheeses.
A perfect, comfortable place to hang out with friends, people watch and have drinks. If you get a chance, stop by The Plaza!
